WOW Wednesday: Erica
When our Crew Members go above and beyond for our customers or employees, we love to recognize it through our WOW Program!
Our WOW Wednesday feature this week is Erica, long-time server at our Boyes Hot Springs location. Erica, pictured above with one of her managers, always goes out of her way to make our guests feel a part of our family.
Recruiting for our Team
One evening, Erica had a table with a little girl who is absolutely in love with Mary’s Pizza. Every time she comes in she loves to do her Kid’s Make Pizza, and then go watch it as it is placed in the oven. On this particular night, as Erica was bringing out the Kid’s Make Pizza, she also brought out a Mary’s t-shirt, name tag, and apron. The little girl just absolutely loved being in full uniform while making her own pizza. The little girl felt very special and her parents were all smiles.

WOW Wednesday: Oscar
When our Crew Members go above and beyond for our customers or employees, we love to recognize it through our WOW Program!
Our WOW Wednesday feature this week is Oscar, Pizza Maker extraordinaire at our Napa location. Oscar’s management team recognized his willingness to go above and beyond his “job” to make our customers feel at home.
A Birthday Fist Pump 🙂
Oscar was making pizzas on a busy night. The servers were starting to get a little behind, so Oscar personally took one of the pizzas that had just come out to the table. When he delivered it, he started chatting with the guest who had ordered it, an elderly woman that had come in by herself. She told Oscar that it was her birthday that evening, but didn’t want to bring a lot of attention to herself.
Oscar wished her a happy birthday and went back to let the server know, helped make the birthday dessert and took it to her. Instead of singing happy birthday, he quietly wished her once more a happy day, gave her a friendly fist pump and went on with his day. The customer was both happy and moved that he did not embarrass her, and let the General Manager know it was one of the nicest things someone could have done to help ring in year 90. Way to go, Oscar!

WOW Wednesday: Rich
When our Crew Members go above and beyond for our customers or employees, we love to recognize it through our WOW Program!
Our WOW Wednesday feature this week is Rich, General Manager at our Windsor location. Anyone who has met Rich has been uplifted by his personality, and impacted by his generosity. He embodies what makes Mary’s such a special place in our communities!
Care for Customers
We have a pair of incredible regular customers that frequently visit us, sit down and dine-in our restaurant, Mary and her son Phillip. Phillip has an ailment that affects his muscles and has a hard time getting around. He uses a walker and struggles at times when using it.
One day Mary came in alone and asked for food to-go. Rich asked where her son was and why they aren’t dining in with us. Mary told Rich that she had forgotten the walker at home before they left, and so she would just have to bring the food home with them.
Rich knows Phillip enjoys getting out and was probably sitting in the car disappointed. Rich called on one of the cooks in the kitchen to assist him. The two of them went out to the car and helped Phillip into the restaurant and to a table. Mary and Phillip were deeply moved that Rich did this for them. The cook and Rich waited for them to finish their meal, then they both got Phillip out to his car. He had a full tummy and a big smile on his face when they pulled out for home.
A Christmas Visit
This WOW was written to us by another General Manager, who wrote a personal letter of gratitude for Rich and his personal care for their family.
On Christmas Eve, as we sat with our baby on her first Christmas, some friends from work as well as my wife and I were gathered in the living room.
We heard a loud KNOCK on the door. My wife looked at me big eyed and said, “Who is that?!” Sounds like a policeman knock. We hesitantly opened the door and to our surprise, it was Santa Clause, Big Red, Saint Nick himself!
He comes bursting through the door with a jolly voice, “HO HO HO! Merry Christmas!” We were SHOCKED and downright speechless. It only took a few seconds, though, to realize it was Rich Volz, General Manager extraordinaire and Santa Clause!
He picked up our daughter and they shared a smile, he rocked her, wished us all a Mary Christmas and he was OUT!!! The whole experience was astonishing to me, the generosity of one man, to forfeit his Christmas Eve to bring joy to others embodies the true spirit of what Christmas is all about. Thank you, Rich.

WOW Wednesday: Ryan
When our Crew Members go above and beyond for our customers or employees, we love to recognize it through our WOW Program!
Our WOW Wednesday feature this week is Ryan, General Manager at our Dixon location. Ryan sees the need, and he jumps into action for our customers as well as community members!
Helping Hand
Upon leaving for the evening on one of his shifts, Ryan saw someone in front of the restaurant with the hood of their car up as if something was wrong. He stopped and asked if everything was okay, and if they needed a jump. The guy said he wasn’t sure what the problem was, but his gauge was reading that the car was overheating.
Ryan checked the coolant fluid and saw there was coolant spilled inside. He suggested to the guest to get a jug of coolant, fill it to get to where he needs to be, then check for a leak. Sure enough, the car started up without issues, and we now have a forever grateful guest that will never forget this kind gesture!

WOW Wednesday: Jason
When our Crew Members go above and beyond for our customers or employees, we love to recognize it through our WOW Program!
Our WOW Wednesday feature this week is Jason, General Manager at our Fairfield location. Jason’s commitment to making our guests and crew members feel a part of our family even outside the four walls of our restaurant is a perfect demonstration of the way Mary ran her restaurant almost sixty years ago.
A Mentor
Jason received a call from a former employee, and they called to say “thank you!” When they interviewed with Jason years ago, he gave them a shot, and not only that, but taught the employee a lot during the time they worked for Jason. The crew member had recently moved to Seattle, landed a really great job with the potential to become a successful career, owing a lot of the business skills they learned to Jason. He was the best manager they had worked for, and little known to Jason at the time: the crew member was going through a handful of personal issues at home when they originally worked for Mary’s. Jason’s work ethic, solid mentoring and personal advice helped improve their outlook during that time of transition, ultimately setting them up for the success they were realizing in Seattle.
Taking Care of our Guests
On his way to work, Jason stopped by another local restaurant to grab a bite to eat for breakfast. He saw another Mary’s regular customer walking into this establishment around the same time, and said “hello.” The regular customer was an elderly man that frequented several of the locally owned restaurants in the area, and was a favorite of the crew at Mary’s, so Jason sat down and chatted with the customer over breakfast, and even purchased his meal when Jason found out over conversation that it was the customer’s 90th birthday just a few weeks before.
Thank you to Jason for making an impact in the lives of our crew members and guests even beyond the four walls of our restaurant!

WOW Wednesday: Sara
When our Crew Members go above and beyond for our customers or employees, we love to recognize it through our WOW Program!
Our WOW Wednesday feature this week is Sara, General Manager at our Petaluma West location. She recently hosted a special Kid’s Tour of our restaurant, and we wanted to share with you all about it!
Girl Power!
Girl Scout Troop #10239 came in for a Kids Tour. They were learning about “Woman in Business.” And What a great idea to come in and see how how our Mary did it! Sara made the Tour extra special: she read Mary’s story on how Mary started her Shack from the pots and pans from her home and with her family right by her side.
Sara also gave them her background with Mary’s as well. Sara has moved up every rank in the restaurant, so this was both inspirational and fun to share. They each made their own pizzas, did a tour of the restaurant and Sara also showed them all the photos of Mary’s family. They were excited and proud of what our Mary has done for her family.

WOW Wednesday: Zoe
When our Crew Members go above and beyond for our customers or employees, we love to recognize it through our WOW Program!
Our WOW Wednesday feature this week is Zoe, server at our Santa Rosa Downtown location. We have two stories to share with you, sent to us from her manager team (pictured above), that exemplify what Mary’s service standards are all about.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!
Zoe received several compliments one evening from multiple tables. One of the tables went out of their way to let the managers know about Zoe’s outstanding service to them, even though they were not her table. They happened to be seated at a table next to her section; their server was running a little behind, so Zoe got drinks for them and helped their server bring out food. They were surprised that she took the time to help out another customer, even if she didn’t directly benefit from it – a true demonstration of teamwork.
Being a Good Neighbor
A very touching example of WOW-service came one night on a busy shift when the store noticed a gentleman standing outside in the patio, not quite at the entrance, but not close enough to a table to be a guest. Being located in downtown, the manager team didn’t think too much about it – after all, people stroll, stand by, and look inside our location in the high foot traffic area frequently. After a few minutes of noticing the gentleman not making too many movements, Zoe went out to check on the gentleman to see if he needed anything. It turns out he was blind, and he was a little stuck – with the congested background noise, he wasn’t able to find his way out of our patio. He lived nearby and thanked Zoe when she took it upon herself to help him walk his way out of the area. But her level of generosity didn’t end there. She then told our host she would be back and walked him down the road to his apartment to make sure he got home safe. This is going well above and beyond what we expect and shows just great human decency. Nice job Zoe.

WOW Wednesday: Kayla
When our Crew Members go above and beyond for our customers or employees, we love to recognize it through our WOW Program!
Our WOW Wednesday feature this week is Kayla, server at our Vacaville location. We have two stories to share with you, sent to us from her manager team (pictured above), that exemplify what Mary’s service standards are all about.
A New Nickname
Kayla recently came to the rescue of one of our guests who had just undergone surgery and was temporarily lacking motor skills in her arm. The guest was trying to check her phone when the phone fell out of her hand and inconveniently bounced into one of the cracks between the frame of a booth and the structural wall. Kayla was nearby and jumped to help the guest – and get this, it wasn’t even her table! While the customer was grateful when Kayla eventually was able to get the cell phone, it was her method that amused the guest and our crew members most. Kayla was able to retrieve the phone using two long objects like chopsticks, earning her the nickname, “Sticks.”
A Helpful Hand
We had a surprise birthday party reserved in the banquet room one evening, and the woman who was hosting wanted to come in early to decorate. Unfortunately, she ended up running late and only had about 10 minutes to decorate before everyone started to show up. Kayla, who was on her meal break at the time, noticed the woman scrambling to get her decorations set up and went to the backroom to ask if she could help with anything. The woman told Kayla she was upset that her flowers were wilting so Kayla offered to trim the stems and put them in water right away. She proceeded to help hang up decorations along the walls and tables. The guest was worried Kayla was busy with other customers so Kayla reassured her it was no problem and she was more than happy to help her. Grateful for Kayla’s help, the guest thanked her and asked her if she would wait on them when the party arrived, which she did. Overall the party was very pleased with the excellent service and happy with their Mary’s experience. Good job Kayla!

WOW Wednesday: Ronnie
When our Crew Members go above and beyond for our customers or employees, we love to recognize it through our WOW Program!
Our WOW Wednesday feature this week is Ronnie, bartender at our Sonoma Plaza location. We have two stories to share with you, sent to us from her manager team (pictured above), that exemplify what Mary’s service standards are all about.
Lunchtime Connoisseur
A couple from out of town showed up for lunch, having never before heard of Mary’s Pizza Shack, and Ronnie was their server. She took the time to go over every menu item and show them what pasta shapes and styles we offer. She also took out small portions of our sauces so they could sample and understand better what we offer. The vacationing couple were so thrilled at the personalized service and expertise, that they joked about planning another vacation to Sonoma in the winter, just to see Ronnie and, this time, bring the whole family!
A Warm Invite
On one of her shift’s breaks, Ronnie was catching some fresh air on the sidewalk in front of our restaurant. She saw a group of tourists standing nearby, debating on whether or not they wanted to eat at Mary’s (those familiar with the layout of the Sonoma Plaza know that there are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to dining). Never a stranger to anyone, Ronnie eagerly went up to them, and started talking about how delicious our food is, how good of a selection our bar has, and that they could even watch their favorite sport on one of our televisions in the bar. Having been impressed and amused by Ronnie’s energy, the group decided they were going to come in, have some “pizza, pasta, and amore!”
Great job Ronnie for always going above and beyond our guests’ expectations!
